Synopsis
The female scholar and director S. Louisa Wei spends almost four years to explore the story of the filmmaker Esther Eng, the first woman directing Chinese-language film in Hollywood, and the most prominent female director in Hong Kong in the 1930s. In the male-dominated film industry, Esther Eng insisted on her unique personal style in both her private life and her films: she liked wearing short hair and male clothes; and her films expressed her bold views on contemporary sociocultural issues including national consciousness, feminism and multicultural communications, which made her distinctive and influential at that age. Today, Director S. Louisa Wei reviews those beautiful memories through the old papers, photos and stories her friends told and leads the audience to follow Esther Eng’s footsteps about films, feminism and individuality.
