Synopsis
In this satire from Krzysztof Kieślowski, a factory worker spends two-months’ salary on a film camera in order to document his newborn daughter. But he is more excited to film the world around him, and quickly distinguishes himself as an amateur documentarian who could be either useful to those in power or a threat to them.

Long before he became one of the world’s most celebrated filmmakers for his Three Colours trilogy, Kieślowski was a documentarian struggling to make honest documentaries about Poland. Those experiences informed Camera Buff, one of his earliest narrative films.

Camera Buff won the Otto Dibelius Film Award at Berlin, the Golden and FIPRESCI

Prizes at Moscow, and the Golden Lion Award in Poland.

Camera Buff is a selection of the bc X HKU Film Club, a joint programme bringing together Cinematheque audiences and University of Hong Kong Masters-degree students in Literary and Cultural Studies. Film Club screenings are followed by in-depth discussions facilitated by filmmaker Kate Reilly. Those conversations are open to all audience members and take place in the 1/F foyer.
