Romania / 2024 / 105 mins
Gay, Drama
Hong Kong Premiere
The serene veneer of a small Romanian town is splintered when Adi is caught one night, lip-locked with a boy visiting from out of town. When news of his "deviance" travels to his parents, they wrestle with conflicting loyalties: their love for their otherwise perfect son against the grip of prejudice, religious doctrine, and social shame. Brutal and terse, writer/director Emmanuel Parvu's camera does not waver in its recording of provincial life, earning the film the Queer Palm in 2024 as well as being nominated as Romania’'s submission at the 96th Academy Awards. Bandaged in the hallmarks of Romanian New Wave Cinema, Parvu's vision is a searing but hopeful examination of homophobia, family, and societal silence.
