Synopsis
Young Karin finds herself abandoned by her father in a small town where her grandfather, a monk, resides. Her grandfather asks Anzu, a ghost cat, to look after her. However, Anzu behaves more like an idle old man than a cat; he aimlessly loiters and sleeps, works part-time as a massage therapist, and would even urinate in front of the temple. As Anzu’s carefree and capricious attitude collides with the spirited, strong-headed Karin, sparks fly. The film’s unconventional rotoscoping technique imbues a sense of authenticity in the interactions between characters, creating a contrast with the story’s fairy-tale qualities and the neo-impressionist Japanese scenery in the background. This leisurely coming-of-age tale is an innovative cinematic delight.1.9 (Fri) 2:00pm | PE
