Inspector Ma fights hard in his pursuit of justice, but his eagerness often leads to him inflicting unnecessary roughness on suspects. Meanwhile, when merciless Vietnamese criminal brothers Archer, Tony and Tiger plot to wipe out a rival gang leader, the police send Hua Sheng to go undercover and expose their plans. Though Archer is captured, Tony discovers Hua Sheng’s real identity and takes brutal revenge against Hua Sheng and other witnesses to save his brother. After Hua Sheng’s girlfriend is snatched by the gang, Hua Sheng is forced to give up testifying against Archer. With great fury, Inspector Ma and Hua Sheng go all out to save the hostage and take down the brothers once and for all. Wilson Yip and Donnie Yen’s third collaboration - following SPL and Dragon Tiger Gate – is a comparatively darker affair that highlights the cruelty of fate with a fierce battle of caged beasts, despite employing a noticeably brighter colour palate. Replacing slowly drawn details, the use of mixed martial arts in the action choreography not only creates a feast for the senses; it also makes a point against using violence to fight violence. In its final moments, the film urges us to abandon obsession and return to a rule of law based on forgiveness and reason.
