Synopsis
In 1935, Leung Sum says goodbye to his heartbroken lover, Mui Ng, and becomes a secret Communist Party's member in the rear of the country. Mui, on the other hand, becomes a nightclub hostess under the arrangement of Mr. Ng. Six years later, the world is in turmoil with the outbreak of the Pacific War. Leung Sum and his fellow revolutionaries return to Shanghai's public concession, where they witness the brutal murder of five Japanese monks that night by a Japanese man named Shirakawa.

Leung follows Shirakawa to a nightclub and kills him, but he is also wounded multiple times. While recuperating from his injuries, Leung meets his lover, Mui, and his old feelings continue to grow. Meanwhile, Shirakawa's death has intensified the conflict in the rented area, and Tie Zemin, the head of the 76th Bureau's secret service, decides to carry out a ruthless purge of the underground party. Mui finds out that she is pregnant, but Leung Sum is nowhere to be found. She has no choice but to marry Noguchi, a Japanese officer, and return to Japan with him. After the end of the war, Leung Sum wants to go to Japan to look for Mui.
