Inspired by his own childhood, Shim’s film captures a poignant and intimate immigrant journey gently. After the suicide of her husband, So-young decides to begin a new life with her son in Canada, but grafting her own Korean cultural legacy onto an unknown tongue is more challenging than expected: racism at school and workplace is rampant; the rift between mother and son is widened by an untranslatable identity crisis in adolescence. An unfortunate news prompts the two to embark on a trip back to Korea and opens up the gate to reconciliation.
