Synopsis
In the past, around 100,000 animals that were not adopted, would be euthanised in Taiwan. The original Twelve Nights (2013) documentary film, explored the stories of those abandoned and stray animals that ended up in the public shelters. A year after the film was released, regulators in Taiwan rushed ahead to pass the No-Kill policy in public shelters. However, without stopping people abandoning animals and illegal puppy mills, the problem of stray dogs was not really resolved.

Since then, private animal welfare charities have launched “Rural Area Neuter Action” and “Spay & Neuter plans” to challenge the deep rooted preconceptions around dog ownership. Public shelters have since planed to build new facilities which have faced serious opposition from residents and protestors who don’t want these new animal shelters to be developed in their ‘backyards’. Those that were lucky enough to be rebuilt, like the new Kaohsiung City Animal Shelter in Yanchao still face the problem of overcapacity. How can we hope for better ‘animal welfare awareness’ for our next generations when people’s perceptions are still muddled?

“Twelve Nights 2: Back to Day Zero” is a sequel that steps out of the older shelters and into different corners of Taiwanese society, delving back to the original source of the stray dog problem. This second film, spans three years of production and explores ‘spay & neuter’, ‘animal shelter systems’ and ‘life education’ through the actions of animal welfare charities and shelters in Taiwan. Revealing the true cause and effect of humans and stray dogs. As part of the investigation, the team also travelled to the United States, Japan and Austria to learn from the experiences of those countries, with the hope of engaging more people in creating better solutions for animal welfare.
