Before he became one of Japan’s most prolific character actors, Lily Franky was best known as a multi-talented novelist and artist. One of his most famous novels is his autobiography Tokyo Tower, a moving tale about a wayward son redeeming his past sins by taking care of his mother in her final years. The award-winning film adaptation by Matsuoka Joji approaches the story with unsentimental realism and offbeat humor, partly thanks to the unlikely pairing of Kiki Kirin and Odagiri Joe as mother and son.
