Synopsis

THE LOVERS AND THE DESPOT is a sensational thriller-romance documentary, which tells the story of South Korean film director Shin Sang-ok and actress Choi Eun-hee who are abducted to North Korea. They meet and fall in love in post-war Korea of the 1950s. One day Choi discovers Shin has been having an affair with a younger actress and hence divorces Shin. Following the collapse of their glamorous romance, they are kidnapped by movie-obsessed North Korean dictator Kim Jong-il in Hong Kong in 1978. Forced to make films in the world’s weirdest state, they get a second chance at love - but only one chance at escape.
