Synopsis
Minsan Isang Panahon (Once Upon a Time, 1990) 4 min, Digital, Philippines, Category: I
The director experimented with optical printing using his childhood Super 8 home movies and hand-coloured found film. He created this work during the influential Christoph Janetzko workshops, conducted in 1989 and 1990, in collaboration with Mowelfund Film Institute, Goethe-Institut, and the Philippine Information Agency.
Director: Melchor Bacani III
Class Picture (2012)
4 min, 35mm, Philippines, Category: I
Shot on a single roll of expired 16mm film, this video—which plays on the idea of still images—evokes faded memories, and injects lyricism and humour into the archetypal class picture, alongside the fleeting sound of waves crashing on a beach.
Director: Tito & Tita
Start From Zero (2012)
57 min, Cantonese with English subtitles, Digital, Hong Kong and Denmark, Category: I
A funeral leads a young woman into a maelstrom of memories, from her life in British-colonial Hong Kong to the previous generation’s escape from the Cultural Revolution. These memories in turn lead to an anticipation of the future. The director utilises empty shots to create a distinctive visual language. Paired with the protagonist’s voice-over, these shots create an imaginative space that is both intimate and detached. The result is a sinuous account of the interwoven historical threads that connect the individual to the city.
Director: Flora Lau
Bundled (2001)
78 min, Taiwanese and Mandarin with Chinese subtitle, Digital, Taiwan, Category: I
Ah Ming, an elderly homeless man, inadvertently picks up a V8 camcorder, which contains footage of a harmonious and happy family. He gradually becomes obsessed with the footage, telling people that the family is his own. Nobody believes him until he meets Wen Ping, a journalist, who interviews him along with his fellow transients, drawing the group of aimless drifters into a life that blends dream with reality.
Director: Singing Chen
Update: Due to the technical issue, the movie Bundled is only Chinese subtitled. We apologize for any inconvenience caused.
