Synopsis
The Future Perfect won numerous awards at top festivals, including Best First Feature at Locarno. The film follows a Chinese teenager as she joins her family in Argentina. While starting from scratch, with new relationships and a new language, the young woman imagines possible futures for herself. Director Nele Wohlatz, who is from Germany, taught at a language school in Argentina, where she encountered Chinese students learning Spanish. Wohlatz’s film was inspired by those fellow immigrants’ experiences, and those students also acted in it. Wohlatz shot The Future Perfect over weekends while also teaching. The film’s formal inventiveness, charm, and heart transcend its modest scale.
