Have you ever stopped to consider bus stops? Despite living in an age of booming design and technology, bus stops have served nothing more than function. Visual aesthetics, let alone creativity, is rarely seen in the architecture of this longstanding infrastructure, but architects who lived in the former Soviet Union may beg to differ.

Living under the Soviet regime was a totalitarian nightmare for architects, who were demanded to build art that promoted communism. However, since authorities could not bother to care about something as benign as bus stops, architects used them as small forms of rebellion. Canadian photographer Christopher Herwig spent seven years tracking down various whimsical bus stops and some of their creators in 15 post-Soviet states. This fascinating documentary pays tribute to the untamable nature of creativity and immortalize these crucial works of art history before they are demolished.
