Shot in sepia tone, Shinji Aoyama’s haunting magnum opus is a slow-burning examination on the lasting effects of atraumatic violent event. In the aftermath of a busjacking, life stands still for driver Makoto who becomes a drifter and teen survivors Naoki and Kozue who fall silent as their family unravels. Moving in with the listless teens, Makoto attempts to forge some normalcy, but the shadow of senseless violence runs deeper than any outsider could understand. Anchored by powerful performances from Koji Yakusho and real-life siblings Aoi and Masaru Miyazaki, Eureka rewards the patient with an uncompromising meditation on trauma that stirs, disorients and lingers in the emotional shock and healing of its characters.
