High in the vertiginous Swiss Alps, a burgeoning romance is put to the ultimate test. Marco is an outsider from the lowlands, who falls for Anna, a local barmaid and single mother, only to be diagnosed with a seemingly inoperable brain tumour. Writer-director Koch revels in the commanding majesty of the natural surroundings, lending an almost mythical weight to his characters’ plight, while acknowledging that the world will endure, oblivious to such an insignificant human tragedy. Special Mention, Berlinale.
