Synopsis

Acclaimed director Kawase Naomi applies her characteristically rich and evocative style to Naoki Prize-winning author Tsujimura Mizuki’s novel about an infertile couple who make the big decision to adopt. Blessed with a beautiful boy, they build an ordinary, happy family together – until the day a young woman appears out of the blue and asks them to return her child. Deftly blending family, social, mystery and human drama elements, this deeply moving yet disquieting film goes on a soul-searching journey into the bonds and anguish of an adoptive mother who strives to have a child and a birth mother who has to give up her child.
