Non-fiction Diary(HKAFF 2020)

Opening on 14 November 2020 (Sat)

Hong Kong

duration93 minutes

dialog

Korean ()

Synopsis

In September 1994, Korea was rocked by the shocking crimes of the Jijon Clan, a group of young men who brutally murdered five people because they wanted to kill the rich. The following year, the Sampoong Department Store collapsed in the country’s deadliest peacetime disaster. The tragedy caused by shoddy construction and gross negligence claimed the lives of over 500 people. Jung Yoon-suk’s searing documentary links together these and other critical events as part of a greater examination of the condition and psyche of Korean society in the 1990s. Non-fiction Diary delivers a scathing indictment of the deep-seated inequality and corruption that permeated society – and the injustice of a system that executes some while exempting others.
