Four very different men – a middle-aged widower, a thrift store employee, a callow student and a mute ex-con – are all infatuated with the same woman: young and beautiful Aileen, who saunters into their pathetic lives and instantly becomes the girl of their dreams. But who is Aileen, really? Dwein Baltazar’s second film is a smart and unsettling look at love – or all its extremes and iterations from longing and exaltation to obsession and possession. In Baltazar’s intoxicating urban vision, love is chemical and the tiny, neurotransmitter-secreting hypothalamus drives our affections. Aileen may seem like the ideal woman, but it’s really the men and their overactive, self-serving imaginations shaping what they see.
